The Forever Young Running Loop is a running and biking trail located in Placitas, New Mexico and is so named for an annual walk/run in memory of the runner/cyclist Charlie Young.
I-25 north from Albuquerque to exit 242. Turn right (east) on Highway 165 for ~2 miles. The parking lot is half a mile from the Homestead Village shopping mall on the south side of the highway.
The main loop is 6 miles of rolling hills. My running group has run the path in both directions and we’re not quite sure which is more difficult. Don’t laugh at my average mile because the elevation change is brutal!
The main loop is wide enough for car access and there are a couple additional parking sites with access to smaller trails.
The views are spectacular!
There are many transverse paths that have high mountain biker traffic. The nice thing about the main loop is that first, you can’t get lost (something that I have been known to do on long runs) and second, there is plenty of room for bikers and runners. It is always startling when a biker is coming fast behind you on a small trail!
